Theatre man Paul Phear gives his take on her show in London...
Idina Menzel in Concert, Apollo Theatre.
So Idina Menzel’s first three songs, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, The Wizard and I and Don’t Rain on my Parade land us firmly in show-tune land at the Apollo theatre.
And folk like me and my daughter who love a good musical tune belted out by a real singer will also love her emotional and perfectly structured 105 minute concert. Twenty five piece orchestra’s don’t come cheap I’m sure, but it’s worth every penny/cent to hear, and in a relatively small venue for a performer who’s more often seen in concert halls.
Three members of the audience will never forget the night they sang with her (and on Monday’s press night they were shockingly good and well prepared!). Her anecdotes were a little too free flowing sometimes, and I don’t think we heard much about Idina that we didn’t already know. But for sheer tingle factor and to see a mistress of the stage (and boy does the spotlight love her!) this is a real treat for musical theatre fans. She’s there till Sunday 14th, and you can hear Idina on Magic Meets with Foxy here….
