Our dance academy, Dance 4 Youth, ran from May until July 2012 and joined together 2 schools, 1 youth club and 58 students. It is a collaboration between Magic 105.4’s Cash for Kids, Transformation Trust and industry dance specialists.

This exciting project aims to support the often difficult transition from primary to secondary school and provide a high standard of dance classes to students who wouldn’t otherwise get this opportunity. For 8 weeks students from year 6 and year 7 came together to learn dance skills as well as explore themes such as transition and change, being the youngest instead of oldest, being somewhere new, determination and self-belief and confidence. Older students are paired with younger students to act as peer mentors and supported to continue this relationship even after completion of the programme. The sessions were led by a dance artist, Chantal, and assisted by an older student trained by our dance teachers especially for this programme.

Students practicing what they have learnt

A wallpaper chart of things participants enjoyed or were apprehensive about in their transition from primary to secondary school.

As a reward the students went to see a West End show, Top Hat, and gave raving review of the show.

But enough from us, we’ll let the young people tell you what they thought!
