THE BETFAIR WEEKEND AT ASCOT: Friday 24th to Sunday 26th July

The Betfair Weekend is renowned for its fantastic racing. Indeed, the £1 million King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday is one of the highest rated races in the world. However, after the racing the focus will turn from the world class action on the track to the beautiful setting of the Old Paddock for a set of live summer music concerts throughout the weekend.

On King George Day, Saturday 25th July, self styled ‘Alternative Rock’ band, Supergrass, take to the stage. The band consists of brothers Gaz (guitar and lead vocals) and Rob Coombes (keyboards), Danny Goffey (drums and backing vocals) and Mick Quinn (bass and backing vocals).

In 2004, the band released a singles compilation entitled “Supergrass Is 10” to celebrate the band’s tenth anniversary. The DVD version featured a documentary in which the band members recall their career. Also featured are behind the scenes footage of recording sessions and live performances. They’ve since released two further albums; Road to Rouen in 2005 and Diamond Hoo Ha both to much critical acclaim.

Friday 24th July sees a trio of modern classical music acts perform; Escala, Blake and Natasha Marsh. In 2008 Escala, the glamorous string quartet, caused a sensation in the final of ITV’s ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. Comprised of violinists Victoria Lyon and Izzy Johnston, viola player Chantal Leverton and cellist Tasya Hodges, they play both acoustic and electric instruments and bring stylish, high-octane showmanship to their performances. Also performing on Friday will be Blake, a four-piece male choir comprising of Ollie Baines, Stephen Bowman, Jules Knight and Dominic Tighe. Their much anticipated second album, And So It Goes, immediately raced to Number 12 in the UK album charts and went straight to no.1 in the Australian Classical chart.

Completing the Friday line-up is Natasha Marsh. Statuesque, standing 5’10” in her bare feet with blonde hair cascading down her back, Natasha dispels the preconceptions we have of opera singers.

Sunday 26th July and it’s time to don the flares and glitter boots as Ascot welcomes Björn Again, who’ll be playing the classic hits of Abba. Who can forget the phenomenal success of box office smash Mamma Mia last summer? Now’s your chance to strut your stuff and sing along – even if you do sound like Pierce Brosnan - to classic tracks such as Waterloo, Money, Money, Money and The Winner Takes It All.

So, to echo the words of Abba’s Benny and Björn, ‘Thank You For The Music’ Ascot!

Tickets to the Betfair King George Weekend start at £15 on Friday and Sunday and £25 on Saturday. To book, or for further information, visit ascot.co.uk or call 0870 727 1234.
