Treat the Old Man To A Wee Dram at Albannach
This Father’s Day, delight your dad with an Albannach Whisky Masterclass, an imaginative alternative to aftershave or a tie.
Renowned for its 200 strong list of exceptional examples of uisge beatha (Gaelic for the water of life), Albannach on Trafalgar Square, London’s finest, contemporary Scottish bar and restaurant, offers the ideal way to say ‘thank you’ to your dad.
Through informal but informative tutorial, demonstration and the all-important tasting, lovers of a drop of the good stuff will learn from Albannach’s expert how whiskies are made and how best to appreciate their individual flavours and characteristics. After covering the basic points, the masterclass will explore different distillers and look at how to differentiate between Highland, Lowland, Campbeltown, Islay and Speyside spirits. Your gift of an Albannach Whisky Masterclass will even open the secrets of distinguishing a single malt from a triple distilled blend, transforming an amateur tippler into an expert sipper.
There are three masterclasses from which to choose, each focusing on a different selection of malts. Flight one is an introductory journey into the world of whisky (£30 per person); flight two explores the various regions and different wood finishes (£35 per person); and flight three takes you on a tour of the distinctive Islay region (£40). Sessions are held on the first three Tuesdays of the month from 6pm to 8pm.
For that extra special touch, join your father at the class and follow it with a superlative Scottish supper. Showcasing the very best produce from North of the border, Albannach’s delicious menu includes such delights as roast scallops, crushed turnips and shellfish Scotch broth; ribeye of Buccleuch beef, dauphinois potatoes, cavolo nero and wild mushrooms; and traditional Scottish cranachan with red berries and shortbread.

Coach and Horses
Clerkenwell’s award-winning Coach & Horses launches inspiring new lunchtime menu.
The Coach & Horses, a stunning Victorian pub (est. circa 1855), re-opened in 2003 to become an award-winning gastro-pub serving excellent food and wine. The new Modern British lunch menu is the hottest addition to a growing culinary scene in Farringdon. Ingredient sourcing is very important to Head Chef, Nick Leonard, who places huge emphasis on seasonal food and quality produce. With an outside terrace area, the family-run Coach & Horses is also perfect for al fresco summer dining.
The new lunchtime menu offers the ideal solution for those looking for a quick bite. Keenly priced small plates are available from just £4 each, 3 for £10 or 2 plates plus a soft drink, pint or glass of wine for £10. Tasty choices may include Grilled asparagus with chopped duck egg, Rollmop herring with saffron potato, and mustard crème fraiche or Marinated anchovies with Murcial Vino, aioli and toast. A selection of main courses is also available from £8, with highlights including Rabbit and wild mushroom pie or Hot smoked salmon with Jersey Royals, broad beans and herb butter sauce. Vegetarians are well catered for with options such as a vegetarian Summer Lasagne. The Coach & Horses’ legendary sumptuous desserts are worth the visit alone with Valrhona chocolate cake being a real favourite.
The wine list has been hand-picked by Colette Webster and, like the food, the wine at Coach & Horses changes seasonally. The list features some unusual wines including Bott-Geyl 'Les Pinots' (Pinots Blanc, Gris, Noir and Auxerrois) from Alsace at £25 a bottle, Kir-Yianni 'Akakies' (Xinomavro), a rose from Macedonia at £19 a bottle and L. A Cetto Zinfandel (also available by the glass) from Mexico at £15 a bottle.
The Coach & Horses dining room is adorned with a selection of prints from a large personal collection of Eduardo Paolozzi artworks - owner Giles, Colette’s husband, was a friend of the great Scottish-Italian artist. The works of art add to the buzzing and quirky atmosphere. This, together with the original charming Victorian décor, the excellent value menu, unique wine list and friendly staff, not to mention the colourful history of the venue (the Coach & Horses was actually next door to the site of the Bear Garden of Hockley-in-the-hole, a purpose-built arena for bear and bull-baiting) adds to the charm of this exemplary gastro-pub, and will ensure an unforgettable dining experience.
